Our Face Takes on a Glow

For a yoga teacher, one of the most wonderful moments of class is seeing students come out of shavasana with a soft, warm glow on their faces.  How many times have we come into class feeling tired or overwhelmed, and then basked in shavasana, in the release of worry, no matter how briefly, before re-engaging in our day with an improved outlook and perspective?  This post-yoga glow is what keeps us coming back again and again.

Here, Master Swatmarama is speaking about longer-term results from practice, and it raises an interesting question:  Should we get (or are we getting) increasingly happier with our years of practice?  No one says the ultimate goal of yoga is to achieve a temporary state of happiness, but the path of yoga is supposed to end in a state of profound happiness and bliss.

Though fraught with ups and downs, the path to bliss is, in itself, an increasingly enjoyable journey.  And at some point, we should evaluate our path based on these criteria:  Am I becoming happier, kinder, more emotionally balanced, and joyful?  Are my thoughts moving from afflicted to unafflicted?  Or as Master Swatmarama describes it, has my face taken on a glow from yoga?
